Where the money goes
01

The work behind the walls.

Demolition, plumbing, electrical work and preparation all matter. A good finish starts before the tiles go on.

02

The choices you can see.

Shower construction, tapware, tiles and cabinetry shape the budget. Premium products and detailed finishes add time and cost.

03

The room you start with.

Moving drains, working through concrete or repairing water damage can make two similar bathrooms cost very different amounts.

What the estimate allows for

  • Typical supply and installation of selected fixtures.
  • Removal and disposal of replaced bathroom fittings.
  • Plumbing and electrical allowances relevant to the scope.
  • For full renovations: typical preparation, waterproofing, flooring, wall finishes, lighting and extraction.

What needs a closer look

  • Rot, asbestos, major leaks or structural repairs.
  • Consent, design fees or engineering requirements.
  • Unusual access, extensive concrete work or remote travel.
  • Custom luxury finishes, rooms over 10 m² or adding a bathroom where none exists.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost?

There is no single price that fits every bathroom. Replacing fittings in the same positions usually involves less work than a full strip-out with a tiled shower and a new layout. Use the estimator above for an indicative range, then arrange a site visit for a quote based on your actual room.

What is the difference between a refresh and a full renovation?

A refresh replaces selected fittings while retaining much of the existing room and finishes. A full renovation removes the old bathroom and rebuilds it, allowing for preparation, waterproofing, finishes and the selected fittings. Existing problems may make a refresh unsuitable.

Why does a tiled shower cost more?

A tiled shower involves more preparation, waterproofing, tiling and detailing than a typical acrylic unit. Glass, drainage design, niches and tile choices can add to the labour and materials.

Can I save money by keeping the layout?

Often, yes. Keeping the toilet, shower and vanity in their existing positions can reduce drainage and pipework changes. Your contractor still needs to check the condition and suitability of the existing services.

Does the estimate include GST?

Yes. All amounts shown by this calculator are in New Zealand dollars and include GST. They are indicative planning allowances, not a fixed-price quotation.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A straightforward full renovation may be planned around two to three weeks on site. Scope, drying times, trade scheduling, product availability and any unexpected repairs affect the actual programme. Agree the timing with your contractor before work begins.

What happens if damage is found during the work?

Hidden damage can require additional work. Ask your contractor to document the issue, explain the repair and provide the cost and timing impact before you agree to a variation.

How do I get a fixed-price quote?

Arrange a site visit and agree on the scope, fixture selections and any exclusions. In Hamilton and Waikato, you can contact CTSWaikato on 0800 872 673 or visit ctswaikato.co.nz.
